He attacked her before evading capture
Synopsis
Delia Balmer, a nurse, met Sweeney, who confessed to killing his ex-girlfriend. Balmer rebuilt his life to confront Sweeney seven years later after being arrested for another murder.
Based on a true crime story
The bodies were dumped in canals in Rotterdam (not Amsterdam) and London. I put my finger in reluctantly, thinking that despite the content, this would be a poorly delivered presentation of a woman’s horror times.
It’s Delia who kept me watching, it’s Delia who made this an exceptional programme
So many of these programs can devolve into sentimentality or sensationalism and cause a viewer to miss the point or, at worst, be manipulated into anguished responses. I was wrong, the performance from Anna Maxwell-Martin was so good that I thought I was listening to Delia.
As an aside, I will add two other comments
Delia worked hard even before the Troubles, her intransigence in the face of what I suspect she considered petty rules and conventions doesn’t endear her. for others.
Enough said; I highly recommend the program
The sheer frustration of watching, yet again, key cops metaphorically fumble around in an unlit room simply because they couldn’t be bothered to turn on the light was palpable. The fury we feel at the court system allowing clearly vulnerable victims to be piloted in the witness box was at its height.
